Piraeus is the principal bunkering hub of the East Mediterranean. Deliveries are made by barge at the Piraeus anchorage areas, and a deep pool of physical suppliers keeps the port consistently among the most competitive in the region.
Since 1 May 2025 the Mediterranean SOx Emission Control Area is in force, capping sulphur at 0.10% inside the Med. That has shifted demand toward LSMGO and ULSFO grades in Piraeus, so availability and price spreads between grades are worth watching more closely than before.

How does the 2025 Med ECA affect bunkering in Piraeus?
Ships sailing in the Mediterranean must burn 0.10% sulphur fuel (typically LSMGO or ULSFO) or use approved abatement. VLSFO 0.50% remains legal to carry and to burn outside the ECA, so mixed stems — VLSFO for ocean legs, LSMGO for Med legs — are common.
