Since 1 May 2025 the Mediterranean SOx Emission Control Area is in force, capping sulphur at 0.10% inside the Med. That has shifted demand toward LSMGO and ULSFO grades in Piraeus, so availability and price spreads between grades are worth watching more closely than before.

Frequently asked questions

How does the 2025 Med ECA affect bunkering in Piraeus?

Ships sailing in the Mediterranean must burn 0.10% sulphur fuel (typically LSMGO or ULSFO) or use approved abatement. VLSFO 0.50% remains legal to carry and to burn outside the ECA, so mixed stems — VLSFO for ocean legs, LSMGO for Med legs — are common.

Is Piraeus cheaper than Istanbul or Malta?

It varies with each port's supply situation. Piraeus usually carries a lower premium than Istanbul, while Malta competes on the Gibraltar–Suez lane. Comparing live quotes across the three is the reliable way to decide.
